What are Crime Rates in South Carolina?


South Carolina has the third highest rate of violent crime in the country, behind Alaska and Tennessee, according to FBI crime data.

In 2011, there were 571.9 incidents of violent crime for every 100,000 people, significantly higher than the national average of 386.3 incidents per 100,000. (The number of incidents per 100,000 is a standard measure used by states to report crime data to the FBI.)

However, 2011 was an improvement over 2010, when the rate was 602.2.

When it comes to specific types of violent crime, the results were mixed:

  • There were 320 murders, an increase of 20.8 percent from the 265 in 2010.
  • There were 1,612 incidents of forcible rape, a 3.9 percent increase from the prior year.
  • Robberies declined 14 percent to 4,313.
  • Aggravated assaults declined 2.7 percent to 20,515.

Property Crimes in South Carolina

The rate of property crime is also high in South Carolina. There were 3,904.2 incidents per 100,000 people in 2011, compared to a national average of 2,908.7.

The total number of property crimes increased slightly from 2010.

  • There were 46,921 burglaries in 2011, an increase of 1.4 percent from 2010.
  • Incidents of larceny/theft grew slightly - 0.5 percent - to 122,100.
  • There were 13,664 motor vehicle thefts, an increase of 2.8 percent.
