Benefits of a Home Security System

Home security systems have been proven to deter criminals. Check of the results of two important studies: a 2009 Rutgers University study or this 1998 study published in a respected journal. Security systems also provide peace of mind.

However, modern security systems offer far more than just burglar protection. They can be used to keep an eye on your children or turn lights on and off remotely. And they alert emergency officials in the event of a fire.

Home security systems are relatively affordable. The average homeowner can expect to pay about $1,000 to $2,000 for a hardwired system (not wireless) with motion detectors. Live monitoring costs start at $20 to $50 per month. Some of that expense will be recouped by the discount on your homeowner’s insurance for having an alarm - usually 15 percent to 20 percent.
