What are Crime Rates in Florida?

Florida has one of the highest crime rates of any state in the country. A property crime occurs every 47 seconds and a violent crime occurs every 5 minutes, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s (FDLE) 2011 Crime Clock.

Specifically:

  • A robbery occurs every 21 minutes.
  • An aggravated assault occurs every 9 minutes.
  • Every 13 minutes, a motor vehicle theft takes place.
  • Every 53 minutes, there’s a forcible rape.
  • Someone falls victim to murder every 8 hours, 54 minutes.

(Keep in mind that the crime clock represents the annual ratio of crime to fixed time intervals. It is intended to show the relative frequency of crimes, not to suggest that the crimes occur in regular time intervals.)

According to the FDLE’s Florida Statistical Analysis Center, the state’s 2011 crime index rate was 4,070.2. That means there were more than 4,000 crimes in the state for every 100,000 people. The rate per 100,000 is a standard measurement that states use to report crime annually to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The good news is, Florida’s crime rate has long been on the decline. The rate peaked at 8,479.9 in 1987 - more than double what it is now - and remained in above 8,000 through 1994. Since then, crime rates have continued to decline. Click here for a complete list of crime index rates dating back to 1971.

Florida Burglary Rates

Burglary is one of the few crimes that has not been on the decline in Florida. Burglary rates have either increased or remained relatively steady for the last 10 years, despite the drop in other types of crime, particularly violent crime.

Burglaries accounted for more than 22 percent of all crime in Florida in 2011, with 170,223 incidents statewide. Interested in more details about your area? Below, you’ll find statistics on the likelihood of a home burglary in the largest counties.

Do I Need a Home Security System?

Home security systems provide peace of mind that your family and belongings are protected from intruders. They’re a proven criminal deterrent. Studies have shown that homes with security systems are far less likely to be burglarized.

A Rutgers University study published in 2009 found that a steady decrease in burglaries in Newark, N.J., from 2001 to 2005 was directly linked to an increase in the number of registered home burglar alarms during the same time period. And some studies have shown that an alarm system makes the chance of a break-in virtually nil.

You can expect to spend anywhere from $100 to $130 per entry point (doors and windows) for a hardwired alarm system with motion detectors. For many homes, this works out to a total cost between $1,000 and $2,000. Monitoring costs usually are range from $20 to $50 per month.
