What are Crime Rates in Alabama?


Crime in Alabama increased 7 percent in 2011, according to a report from the state’s Criminal Justice Information Center.

Violent crime, which includes murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, increased 11 percent to a total of 20,290 incidents. Specifically:

  • Homicides increased 22 percent from 2010 to 2011, from 255 to 311. However, 2010 was an unusually low year. In 2009, there were 318 incidents.
  • Incidents of rape increased 13 percent to 1,404 incidents.
  • Robbery increased 7 percent following two years of significant decline. However, the rate remains much lower than it was in 2009.
  • Aggravated assault increased 13 percent to 13,690 incidents.

Property crime, which includes burglary, larceny/theft and motor vehicle theft, grew 7 percent from 2010 to 2011 for a total of 171,028 incidents.

  • Burglary shot up 23 percent to 50,425 - the highest rate in at least five years.
  • Larceny/theft increased 1 percent.
  • Motor vehicle theft increased 2 percent.

In equally dismal news, Alabama’s violent and property crime rates were well above the national average. The rate of violent crime in 2011 was 422.5 per 100,000 people, compared to a national average of 331.8. The rate of property crime was 3,561.1 per 100,000, compared to a national rate of 2,908.7.
